Here are a few Mad Men-related books that will be coming out soon. I'm absolutely ready to dive into both of them.


The Fashion File: Advice, Tips, and Inspiration from the Costume Designer of Mad Men by Janie Bryan
(Release date: November 4th)

From Joanie's Marilyn Monroe-esque pencil skirts to Betty's classic Grace Kelly cupcake dresses, the clothes worn by the characters of the phenomenal Mad Men have captivated fans everywhere. Now, women are trading in their khakis for couture and their pumas for pumps. Finally, it's hip to dress well again. Janie Bryant is on a roll with her Mad Men-esque line on QVC and now this book, which I'm extremely excited about. Of course I'm a big fan of the costumes on Mad Men and the overall style of the late-'50s, early '60s. I can't wait to see the insights Janie has to offer to all of us who secretly (or not-so-secretly) wished we lived in the past.




Mad Men: The Illustrated World by Dyna Moe
(Release date: October 6)

By turns fun, sophisticated, and celebratory, this is an eye-popping and inventive companion to the hit show Mad Men, as well as a salute to the era of cocktails and Camelot. Dyna Moe is also the illustrator behind the Mad Men Yourself game on AMC's Web site. She's also got an entire set on her Flickr dedicated to her Mad Men illustrations. I think my favorite is #3.3 Showboatin' with Pete and Trudy's fabulous dancing. I'm so excited to see what this book is like.

wishpot wednesday: miss selfridge and b makowsky

Hello, lovelies! This week (and always) I'm crazy about Miss Selfridge. I wish we had a little dress shop here in the States just like it. Lucky for us, there's such a thing as online shopping!

Adore the lace sleeves and the overall shape of this dress. Wouldn't it be darling with black tights and little ballet flats? I love the neckline, too, which allows for lots of jewelry options. Dresses like this with layered necklaces are always so charming to me.

This print is so cute! I've always been a fan of empire waists (even when they're not in vogue) because they're ultimately flattering and always a little reminiscent of Jane Austen. I always say my love of fashion usually goes with my love of history! Love the detailing on the bottom and the sleeves as well.

Who doesn't want a snood?! I'm enthralled by these (and also those eternity scarves) as I've never worn anything like it. I love my scarves and I tie them all different ways. It would be fun to play around with a snood. Plus, the color is divine and it looks utterly like the height of comfort!



B. Makowsky Sindy Pump in Tobacco Leather; $143, Zappos.com
These shoes! It's no secret that I'm Bruce Makowsky's biggest little fan so it's only a matter of time before my Wishpot lists become B. Makowsky central. His lovely shoes and bags are featured on QVC occasionally (confession: I DVR'd his recent shoe collection. Shameless!) but I didn't happen to see these ditties on the air so when I happened across them on Zappos it was right into the ol' Wishpot. How darling are they? I love the studs and flower details. I also have a slight problem - I love all the colors they come in! Black, taupe, natural and of course the tobacco. How does one choose?!



Audrey Hepburn, An Elegant Spirit: A Son Remembers by Sean Hepburn Ferrer
I'm not sure if this book is still in print, but I've wanted it since it was first published. Sean is so passionate about preserving the memory and spirit of his amazing mother; I can only imagine how wonderful a portrait he paints of her in this book.

Stunning, no? Virigina Woolf is such a monumental inspiration to me as a writer.

I spent a good portion of my weekend trying to spiff up my little blog's layout. What do you think? I hope it's not too crowded. I was bored with the sidebar and wanted to try something new. I'm not yet finished so pardon some of the lesser aesthetics, like the navigation tabs being all shifted to the side like so. I'm hoping to do an overhaul of my labels and pages sometime this week.

Five words could be difficult, but we'll go with... beauty, kindness, imagination, comfort, intellect. I think those words do well to describe what I'd like to convey with this blog, but also the people I've met and the blogs I read.

I'm going to cheat a bit here. I won't be passing the award on to ten other bloggers; I read so many spectacular blogs (check my blogroll for the full list), but when I saw this award, thought about the meaning of it, there was one blog in particular that came jumping to mind. I'd love to pass the award on to the lovely Berenice of ArtFashion. Reading her blog has been such a breathtaking experience for me. With each entry she stimulates and educates her readers, taking them into the depths of art as she sees it, with all its darkness and honesty. Fashion, film, music, writing, visual arts are all things she's passionate about and she has such a great understanding of the meaning behind them. It's beyond fascinating. Bere is a deep thinker, a fearless dreamer and just about the kindest gal I've ever met. If you're not following her blog yet I really can't urge you enough to get over to ArtFashion and see the kind of reading experiences that have been missing from your life!

great reads: online magazines

Online magazines are all the rage, and they're the perfect outlet for all the whimsical styles and talented artists found throughout the internet. Last week I mentioned the brand new design and inspiration magazine Rue; this week I'd love to share two of my newly-found favorites, Cellardoor and Unicorn/Dream. (I did a post previously about the fabulous photography of Mike Bailey-Gates in a past issue of Unicorn/Dream over here.) And yes, that's Kathryn Prescott (looking ever so lovely as a brunette) on the cover of Cellardoor!


In Unicorn/Dream I love the photography of Aleyn Comprendio (check out her gorgeous Flickr photostream - it's a beautiful place). She also photographed the beautiful cover. There are pages and pages of stunning photographs, poetry, Etsy finds (lace gloves!) and so much more to get lost in. Also, check out the delightful inspiration page on their web site for even more whimsical goodness.



And in Cellardoor it's so exciting to see Emma's interview with Marina Diamandis aka Marina and the Diamonds! I love Marina's music quite obsessively. Also loving the fab A/W Trends article with illustrations by Abby Wright and the Whimsical Wallpaper interview with Hannah Dick. Cellardoor also has a blog, so go check that out too!

wishpot wednesday: piperlime

I add and then I take away. Earlier this week I got the ultra fabuloso ELLE boots I wished for! They're divine, I love everything about them. The style is just what I wanted, plus they're comfortable and slenderizing. Not too shabby for $35. On sale. With an extra 15% off. I also got brown leggings and a plaid tunic which, complete with my new boots and a floppy little brown hat, has me ready to go strolling in an orchard. Leaves, you may now start to fall. Bring on autumn! Oh, and for anyone who was as smitten as I with my lovely Spotted Moth dream bag, it's now back in stock at Spotted Moth and apparently the designer has stopped production on it. So whenever it sells out, it's gone for good! Go check it out and definitely purchase one if you're interested. I really recommend it.

Anyway, on to this week's Wishpot Wednesday! I spent lots of time online-window-shopping on Piperlime yesterday and these were a few of my favorite things...

Love this! I somehow don't have anything quite the same style, but now I want one. Ha! It looks so comfortable and chic. I love solid color tops that still manage to make a statement. It leaves lots of room for adding elements with lots of character and makes the look quite interesting.



Juicy Couture Faux Fur Vest in Heather Deep Caviar; $228
When I first saw this vest I thought it was just the sort of way I'd like to wear fur. I like how it ties in the front, breaking up the fur and making it much less barrel-like than other vests. Then I noticed that it's faux fur - exactly what I wanted! Definitely Wishpot-worthy.



Tahari Foster Boot in Stone; $129
I'm in love with the fold-over trend in boots lately, and these especially are such a gorgeous color! I love the zipper detail, too.

Hive and Honey Open Metal Hinge Bracelet in Bronze Ox; $28
This is totally my kind of bracelet. I love the look of bangles and cuffs, but I can never seem to get them over my wrists. The idea of having a hinge on it is kind of brilliant, I think. And I just love the design!

Illustrations by C.E. Brock for Jane Austen's Persuasion, 1909. See all 24 here, as well as Brock's illustrations for other Austen novels over here. Persuasion is certainly my favorite of Jane's works. It's one of the three (with Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park) that I read before seeing any adaptations. There's really such an enthralling sort of magic to them when you don't know the stories, and yet I can read them over again with the same excitement. I wish there was an illustration for Captain Wentworth's letter to Anne Elliot (I'm a hopeless romantic, that's one of my favorite parts in the book). If you've never read it - as I know a lot of people who've read Pride and Prejudice and not this gem - here's what you're missing:

I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago. The lovely Kayla of Ramblings of a Small Town Girl was so sweet to pass the Beautiful Blog award on to me! Thanks again, Kayla! I'm supposed to list seven facts about me and pass the award on to a few other people. You might remember the last time I listed seven facts about myself and how...well, how boring it was. These seven facts are a little more about things I like, because I could go on about that list forever...

001. I have very diverse music taste. My last.fm shows everything from British pop (Little Boots, Elle Goulding, Kylie Minogue) to indie folk (A Weather, The Swell Season, Bon Iver) to swing and standards (Michael Buble, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra). I also like classical crossover (Il Divo, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli) and classical (mostly just Bach at the moment).

002. I don't know how to sew. When I was little I made a teddy bear for my Sunday school class, which we donated to a children's hospital. That's the only time I've ever sewn anything, ever. I used to crochet, and I'd love to get back into that. I came across a sweet little television program this morning and it's really inspired me. (I'd also love to learn to knit, but it looks so very difficult!)

003. I love libraries and bookstores, anywhere I can be surrounded by books. People talk about the way books make them feel infinite; I'm one of those people. I could talk for ages about books, my favorite stories and characters and the way they all make me feel. (Don't worry, we'll save that for another entry.)

004. I love collecting quotations! I'd love to have a notebook where I keep them all in one place, but most of the time when I buy a notebook I'm too afraid to write in it because I don't want it to become "used" and thereby irrelevant. Hopefully I'm not the only person in the world who's quite that silly. Anyway, a few of my favorites:

005. When I was eight years old I was introduced to one of Claude Monet's many infamous Water Lilies paintings and decided I loved Impressionism. I still remember seeing the painting in a shop window at that age and telling my mom quite adamantly who the artist was. I've been passionate about the movement ever since.

006. I love a good old-fashioned mystery. I used to be obsessed with Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot novels, and of course the Murder on the Orient Express film with one of the most amazing casts ever. I love the British mystery series Inspector Lewis, too. The stories that aren't about scaring you, but just about solving this intriguing puzzle. I like to occupy my mind and look for clues. I'm not always very good at it, but I like it!

007. On the subject of #001 and #003, I always match certain books and music to certain seasons. Fall is my favorite music season because I usually have a mix of melancholy indie folk (Rosie Thomas, William Fitzsimmons) and vintage-inspired swing (Robin McKelle, Imelda May). The books are almost always historical novels. Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series is an example of perfectly fall-like books to me. (I've only read the first two in the series so Voyager is of course on my list for fall this year.) Anything by Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, Elizabeth Gaskell, they're all my ideal reads for fall as well. My latest interest is the Tudor dynasty so I recently bought a few Tudor-related novels I'd love to read this year, too.

I was trying to spiff up my layout a bit and wanted to make some of these icons - I'm not sure I love the way they turned out, but I thought I'd share them just in case anyone else likes them. Betsey Johnson Spring 2011 RTW

These were the dresses that closed Betsey Johnson's Spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear show at Fashion Week on Monday, sparkling with the edgily whimsical flair that is so uniquely Betsey. They also sparkle with airbrushing and puff paint. Betsey learned to airbrush a week before her show and handmade one dress every day. Isn't that amazing? Backstage with Robert Verdi on the FirstComesFashion livestream she talked about how she loved the solid colored gowns, but they just "didn't fly". To me, that's a perfect example of how dedicated she is to making her dreams come true. She never stops dreaming and she never stops achieving. I find that so inspiring. Betsey will also be auctioning off the one-of-a-kind dresses for charity, to support the fight against cancer. Pretty fabulous, right?



I'm quite behind in my blogroll-reading this week (you were fabulous, Fashion Week, but you took over my life!) so my great read for you this weekend is the stupendous and brand new Rue, an online magazine about decor and inspiration. The layout and graphics are so wonderfully done, everything about the magazine is crisp and clear. Check it out and enjoy!

spotted moth dream bag

At the beginning of the month I included a gorgeous bag from Spotted Moth in my Wishpot Wednesday. Remember that? Well, I bought it!



It was all wrapped up so prettily.


I almost didn't want to open it! (That didn't last long.)


It's like a dream. It's so spacious and beautiful and soft. I love that it has the option of using handles or a shoulder strap. (The latter is removable.)


The studs on the side and the way it tucks around like that adds so much character, too.


And the studs on the bottom, of course.


The lining is black-and-white stripes! Did I mention this bag was made for me?

It arrived only a few days after I ordered it, dangerously convenient. If you've entertained buying anything from Spotted Moth, I can completely recommend it. wishpot wednesday: designer edition

Hello, and welcome to the most decadent, most luxurious Wishpot Wednesday that this blog will probably ever see. Since it's Fashion Week I thought it would be really fun to indulge my whimsy and make this edition of Wishpot Wednesday all about designer items. I usually cut myself off from the really expensive things (because I try to be realistic with money - key word being try), but this week I decided to let loose. I did the Net-a-Porter thing and the ShopBop thing and the Barney's thing. It was like stepping into a dream world! I'll go back to reality on October 1st, when the great month of fashion is over. Until then, let's get posh up in this joint!

Even though the woman modeling this dress has it paired with stiletto boots and a sharp black trench in the video (because yes, you get to see videos of the clothes when you shop on Net-a-Porter!) I think it would be fun paired with the black cut-off stockings I just got and maybe a pair of black ballet flats. And maybe a black camisole and the royal blue scarf my sister gave me for my birthday, which I completely adore? (Look at me, styling a $1,000 dress! I must be in a zippy mood.)



Miu Miu Studded Patent Leather Pumps $595, net-a-porter.com
A pair of Miu Miu heels that I could actually manage to walk in! That's a must for this list. Miu Miu is such a fun and flirty, young and fresh label with so much flash and pizazz, yet it still maintains that classy je ne sais quoi that I love about Miucca Prada. I love that the studs on these pumps go right down the heel. From a distance they look like polka dots, don't they? They make such a statement.



Anna Sui Sequin and Lace Silk Blouse $315, net-a-porter.com
I don't know if the picture does this top justice; you really have to go to the site and see the close-ups to get the full effect of just how magnificent it is. The lace neckline is so gorgeous! I love all the detailing everywhere on this top. It's so noir, so gothic in a Victorian kind of way.


Marc Jacobs Rio Bag in Beige $1,295, Barney's
This bag. Just look at it! I'm experiencing a small obsession with quilted leathers on bags lately. The handles and hardware on this one are so classy, kind of vintage. Love it!

The Row Audrey Sweater $1,190, Barney's
I've been intrigued by the O-twins' line lately, especially after their move from New York to Paris Fashion Week. Nice. So when I looked up their collection on Barney's I completely fell in love with this sweater. I love the cowl neck, it looks slightly unique. I also love the colors! I couldn't choose one. I always gravitate toward black/gray (in case that wasn't obvious) so the camel trend that seems to be taking fall by storm is really rather lost on me. I think camel looks gorgeous on everyone else, but I don't feel like it flatters me. This sweater, however, is such a rich tone in the camel. I would definitely be willing to try that.


I could spend all day going through these shops. It's amazingly fun when the stuff from the runway hits stores, I love that feeling of remembering the first time I saw it. I'm already working on a springtime edition of this post with a bunch of the things I've been seeing on the runway at Fashion Week this season.

1. Why did you start blogging?
Well, when Jen (of Sprinkled Dreams) started the fashion blog SHE - Style through Her Eyes she asked me (and a few other girls, including Karen who still posts with us) to be a part of it; that was really my introduction to blogging. I was extremely eager to work with her on SHE because we have a lot of similarities in our personalities and we're great friends. Starting out on something like this with a friend is a great way to experience it. We have so much fun sharing ideas with each other and working to build up the site as a team. I decided to start The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower as my personal space for inspiration and sharing. It's grown into something of a fashion blog for my own personal style, but I'm hoping to continue to work with it and bring in elements of other things I enjoy too, such as art, books and music. I see it as a sort of scrapbook of things I like, things that inspire me. I don't know if any of that really answers the Why part of the question, but suffice it to say that I enjoy sharing things with people with the hope that they'll find something new and exciting to love.

2. Do you prefer Spring/Summer or Autumn/Winter?
Autumn and winter, definitely. I love everything about those seasons. I love the fashion, the holidays, snow storms when you don't have to go out and can curl up with a blanket, a book and a cup of hot chocolate. I'm a big fan of layering and accessories so summer doesn't tend to thrill me from a fashion standpoint. Although, watching all the livestreams from Fashion Week does have me oddly excited. I'm loving some of the trends for next year!

3. What did you notice first: Smokey eye makeup or bright lips?
Absolutely bright red lips. My sister had a make-up caboodle at a very young age because of her ballet performances and she had a candy apple red lipstick that I craved. I've been pretty fearless with red lips every since then.

4. Who are your style icons?
Audrey Hepburn is obvious, of course. I don't know that she's directly a fashion inspiration to me - because let's face it, those skinny black pants are just a far-off dream for some of us curvy gals - but her overall style inspires me a great deal, the classy and graceful way she always behaved. She had this amazing ability to not only be memorable but to be iconic, and she did it all without being outlandish or inappropriate. I think that's a pretty big deal. Class and grace, that was her style and that's what I try to achieve. My own personal version of it, I guess.

5. Describe your personality in 3 words.
Introverted, benevolent, refined. (I'm never very good at answering that question so I tried to be creative. Ha!)

6. If you had to leave the house with only one item of make-up what would it be?
Translucent pressed powder! I'm a victim of Shiny Face Syndrome throughout the day, so that's really a must.

7. Which era do you think influenced fashion the most?
Good question. Fashion in history is such an interesting subject to me, how it evolved and the different movements that influenced it. I think other people could give much better and more fascinating answers to this question than I can, though. Sometimes I think the sixties were incredibly influential because so much happened in those years and so many new things came around. Like the miniskirt, which obviously had a big effect on fashion. Bell bottoms, etc. A lot of things that fashion today seems to still pick up on or use to some extent. The eighties were monumental, too. There was such a stubbornly outspoken element to eighties fashion that seems to resonate still.

8. What beauty item do you always repurchase?
I recently ran out of my Maybelline Falsies mascara and I'm missing it so much! It's definitely going to be a repurchase for a while, I think. My other big ones are the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero and the Urban Decay shadow in Sin. The latter matches my skin tone well, but with an extra shine. I always use that for a base, every day. The glide-on pencil is so easy to use and it has such a dramatic effect. Love it.
