breathless for jean seberg (and a guest post)

Readers of SHE who saw my Friday Fame: Jean Seberg post recently will already know that I cite Jean's fabulous character in the classic 1960 French film, À bout de souffle as one of my favorite on-screen style icons. Needless to say, a recreation of the film's most famous scenes through fashion photography is just the thing for me. I've seen bits of this photoshoot over time, but last night I finally found the full set! From Us Vogue all the way back in '90, Christy Turlington plays Jean Seberg's Patricia while Stéphane Ferrara recreates Jean-Paul Belmondo's Michel. I can't believe this set is twenty years old. Where does the time go? This is such a fun tribute, and so wonderfully achieved; Christy and Stéphane captured both the actors and the characters so well, and Ellen von Unwerth recreated the intricately lazy vibe of Godard's first film with vigor. Some of my favorite moments from À bout de souffle are captured here. I wouldn't mind going back in time to 1990 and snagging a copy of this issue - and then going further still to 1960 to see this film in all its original glory!

hitchcock, pink martini and weekend reads

Pink Martini is a twelve-piece band from Portland that rather defies classification. Wikipedia says, "They draw inspiration from music from all over the world – crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop." That's the most accurate description I can imagine. They're incredibly fun and delightful and perfect for when you're spending a cozy Friday night in, like I am tonight. I'm crazy about the vocals of leading lady China Forbes, and this particular song - "Hey, Eugene" - is inspired by a true and not-so-romantic story that happened to her. It's a rather odd little song, but I adore it. I think you can't help but instantly start dancing along to it, just a little bit.

This post is happening in the wee small hours because Blogger decided that this whole blogging thing was just a little too easy for me - so why not delete the post that took me a half-hour to compose? If you weren't blogging about fashion, what would you be blogging about instead?
I have a lot of different interests - art, poetry, entertainment, etc. - and I'd like to eventually incorporate all of it into my blog, but I think right now I just happen to be slightly obsessed with fashion. I suppose my timing is good, right? Considering that it's September and all. I also think it would be pretty fantastic to be a travel blogger, though as I mentioned in my last post I don't do much traveling. You've probably noticed the different tabs on my layout, which are things I'd like to blog more about in the future; although we'll see how long it takes before that DIY tab comes down because I am the most un-craftiest person on the planet. I'm lucky if I can stay inside the lines of a coloring book.

Who was your most embarrassing crush?
Hmm. If we're talking about celebrity crushes I have plenty of embarrassing names that I could be tossing out here. I'm always drawn back to remembering the crushes I had when I was very young. Erik Estrada (yes, I was a CHiPs girl), Scott Baio, Dirk Benedict on The A-Team. Oh, the memories.

If you were stranded on a desert island and allowed one "luxury' from home, what would you bring with you and why?
It's going to sound really ridiculous, but...a nail file. I have very thin nails and whenever they chip or break they snag on everything and I cannot get to a nail file fast enough. I know, I wouldn't last a day in the wild. Shameful.

The last book you read was...
Stern Men by Elizabeth Gilbert


I found myself distracted and uninterested while reading it, so my opinion isn't the best and could possibly change after a second reading. Eat, Pray, Love is one of my favorite books so I was anticipating that I would really adore her fiction, however that didn't seem to happen. The heroine felt cynical and depressed, and it was hard for me to really connect to any of the characters. The times I felt most captivated were in the few flashbacks about the heroine's mother and grandmother.

If you could live in a different era, which one would you choose, and why?
The 1950s!

There's so much to love about the '50s. Juliette Gréco, Chanel, Audrey Hepburn's early films and the rise of Givenchy, MGM musicals, I Love Lucy and some really monumental literature (The Lord of the Rings, Catcher in the Rye, Lolita, The Chronicles of Narnia...) not to mention the fashion.

Of course, in my version of the '50s I'd be attending lots of fabulous parties where I'd drink champagne and dance with Cary Grant all night. Naturally!


Where is your favorite place to shop and why?
Francesca's and White House | Black Market are two of my new favorite places. You can read a bit about White House | Black Market on my post on SHE. And then, of course, if we're not talking about fashion I need to mention Ulta and Barnes & Noble because I could really live in either of them. Then there's shopping online, which can just get dangerous. I love sample sale web sites, I've gotten so many wonderful things from HauteLook, RueLaLa and Modnique. Then there's ModCloth and Ruche and TopShop. So many lovely places.

Gold or silver jewelry?
Silver!

Silver is so chic to me. It goes with anything. I have a hard time pairing gold with certain colors, it just looks too busy (although other people seem to be able to pull it off quite well). Silver can stand on its own or you can pair it with other colors. Very versatile.

Your favorite drink is...
Vino. I really only drink reds. I like Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. I'm no connoisseur so I tend to go with an inexpensive favorite most of the time. Otherwise I drink coffee and water, not very exciting.

It's a little odd having Christmas and New Years episodes in the summer, but then it's also rather fun. The clothes are further encouraging my excitement for fall, at any rate; and I just plain love this show. I never get tired of the characters and stories.

cary and ingrid and weekend links

It's August, which means that Turner Classic Movies is hosting their annual Summer Under the Stars. Today happened to be Ingrid Bergman day, where they showed one of my favorite films ever, Notorious. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1946, it pairs Ingrid with one of my favorite actors of the era, the unstoppably charismatic Cary Grant.


Aren't they gorgeous? I love their chemistry together. And Ingrid has the most spectacular costumes, hair and make-up. Look at her eyelashes!


The film represents Hitchcock when I loved him best: well before birds and psychos and back in the early days of his Stateside career. Films like Rebecca and Spellbound, the ones that had a sort of edge-of-your-seat thrill without necessarily aiming to "scare" you.


It's full of really fantastic lines like, "I guess I'm the girl nobody remembers." and, "Dry your eyes, baby; it's out of character." The sort of things that should only be said in black-and-white, preferably with a fedora and a cigarette present.
Shamelessly, I don't own the DVD but I did record it so a much-needed rewatch is on my agenda for the weekend, as well as lots of shopping and hanging out with my sis before she has to leave - and, of course, lots of blog-reading! Firstly, thank you so much to everyone who left comments and followed me over the weekend! I can't tell you how excited and surprised I was to see that. When I post comments on other blogs it's because I like that blog and want to support the writer; I think the posts are so interesting, I genuinely have so much fun reading other blogs. So I never expect people to wander over here at all, nevermind leaving comments and following! So thank you (:

Okay, now I have two things to share. I found a darling video from bellatv on how to get the milkmaid braid look, similar to Robin Tunney in my last post. Check it out:



I tried it, but my hair is so thick that it just kind of looked like a big mess on top of my head. But I think it might work well if I do a bunch of little braids rather than two big ones. So I'm going to try that soon! If anybody tries the style in that video do let me know how it works for you.

And now, some pretty pictures from last night's Mad Men premiere (spoiler alert?). This show! I've missed it so much. And I thought the premiere was just fantastic.

I'm pretty sure Neal Caffrey is the most fashionable character on television. I love all of his Sy Devore suits and his darling fedora. If you've never seen White Collar you should check it out. I'll be all settled in front of my TV tonight for the season premiere!
